SINCE 1767
Founded in 1767 originally as clothiers, in Batley Carr Mills the company expanded into heavy woollen textile manufacturing in the late 18th century through a merger of local businesses. The Ellis family played a pivotal role in its founding, and it wasn’t until the 1830s that the company adopted the name Joshua Ellis & Co Ltd. A division of Luxury Fabrics, part of SIL Holdings Ltd. Company Registration 4296467
For over 250 years, Joshua Ellis has been synonymous with exceptional, luxurious fabrics and accessories. Now part of The SIL Group, the company remains family owned, staying true to its core philosophy: to create the highest quality fabrics using only the finest natural fibres.
Every step of the manufacturing process, from sourcing raw materials to creating the finished product, takes place in Yorkshire, the historic heart of woollen textile production.
Although the company moved from its original mill buildings in 2004, Joshua Ellis continues to honour its legacy while evolving to meet the demands of the modern textile industry.
CENTURIES OF HONED CRAFTSMANSHIP
We take great pride in our industrial heritage and deep-rooted connection to Yorkshire. Every metre of fabric we weave is crafted with the same meticulous care and attention to detail passed down through countless generations of skilled artisans. For over 250 years, our mill has resonated with the hum of craftsmen and machines, producing exceptional fabrics from the world’s finest fibres cashmere, wool, and camel hair, while preserving the time-honoured techniques that have been perfected and handed down through the generations.
Nestled in the heart of Yorkshire, England a region celebrated for producing the world’s finest textiles our fabric has earned a reputation among the world’s most prestigious fashion houses. As part of the Luxury Fabrics family, our mill combines cutting-edge textile technologies with centuries-old craftsmanship to create the luxurious fabrics we produce today. Over the years, we have perfected the art of working with cashmere, from iconic ripple fabrics to Elysian cloths for duffle coating and our renowned double-face coatings.
DUFFLE, RIPPLE & DOUBLE-FACE
Once woven on our own looms, our cashmere fabrics undergo an extensive finishing process that enhances their exceptional handle, natural lustre and refined appearance. Every stage is carefully controlled to bring out the unique qualities of the fibre, resulting in the unmistakable character of premium cashmere.
Our Elysian duffle fabric, named for its exceptional texture, is truly unique, crafted from carefully selected wool that strikes the balance between coarseness and softness. Woven in a complex triple cloth structure, weft floats create the distinctive texture, and, like corduroy and velvet, the pile is formed by breaking rather than cutting the floats. Following an extensive finishing process, the fabric undergoes 15 individual finishing stages, making it one of Joshua Ellis's most labour-intensive qualities.
Our double-face cashmere fabric is a staple, crafted with the precision and skill of our designers. Woven from two layers of cashmere on our specialised looms, each layer is designed with a different colour or texture. This creates a fabric with two beautifully finished faces, offering exceptional versatility while maintaining the luxurious handle and performance synonymous with Joshua Ellis.
From design and yarn spinning through weaving, finishing and final inspection, every stage of production takes place under one roof. This complete control over the manufacturing process has made Joshua Ellis synonymous with the finest cashmere and camel hair fabrics, earning an enviable reputation among leading fashion houses around the world.
